Numerical Simulations of the Impacts of Land-Cover Change on Cold Fronts in South-West Western Australia
نویسندگان
چکیده
The south-west of Western Australia has experienced significant land-cover change as well as a decline in rainfall. Given that the majority of precipitation results from frontal passages, the impact of land-cover change on the dynamics of cold fronts is explored using the Regional Atmospheric Modelling System version 6.0. Frontal simulations are evaluated against high resolution atmospheric soundings, station observations, and gridded rainfall analyses and shown to reproduce the qualitative features of cold fronts. Land-cover change results in a decrease in total frontal precipitation through a decrease in turbulent kinetic energy and vertically integrated moisture convergence, and an increase in wind speed within the lower boundary layer. Such processes contribute to reduced convective rainfall under current vegetation.

Numerical simulations of the impacts of land-cover change on a southern sea-breeze in south-west Western Australia
A sea-breeze event in south-west Western Australia is simulated using the Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (RAMS) version 6.0. The model is evaluated against high resolution soundings as well as station observations and is shown to reproduce the qualitative features of the sea-breeze well. Sensitivity tests are carried out to investigate the effects of historical land-cover change and chan...

This study has used a numerical model (RAMS) at 1 km horizontal grid intervals over the Sydney Basin to assess the impact of land cover change on storms. Multiple storms using the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis data were simulated with pre-European settlement land cover then re-simulated with land cover representing Sydney's current land use pattern. While all si...
متن کاملThe role of land use change on the development and evolution of the west coast trough, convective clouds, and precipitation in southwest Australia
[1] Land clearing for agricultural purposes in southwest Australia has created a landscape where a 750 km rabbit‐proof fence separates 13 million hectares of croplands from the remnant native vegetation to the east. The Bunny Fence Experiment (BuFex) was conducted in the vicinity of the intended vermin‐proof boundary in December 2005 and August 2007. The experiment examined the role of land cov...

Great changes in land use/land cover from rapid urbanization have occurred in the PearlRiver Delta, China. As the primary cause of land development in the urbanization process, urban expansion has mostly occurred on land with higher NPP, significantly impacting theregional ecosystems. The primary purpose of this study was to reveal the impacts of urbanexpansion on the regional NPP. The land cove...
